Know the type of gem you’re buying, when you buy it. The three different types of stones are natural, imitation and synthetic. Imitation is plastic that is colored to looked like the stone, but natural stones and synthetic stones are real. The difference here, however, is that synthetic is man-made in a laboratory while natural is found buried in the earth.

If you buy jewelry from a jewelry store, ask if they offer insurance. If your jewelry becomes damaged, you can return it to the source and have it repaired. In certain instances, there may even be jewelry insurance available to cover loss or theft.

Keep your jewelry from tarnishing as best as you can. When wearing your jewelry, you should avoid exposure to water. Many of the metals become tarnished, rusty or dull when they get exposed to the elements of water. To protect your jewelry from exposure, apply a single coat of clear nail lacquer to its surface.

You could wear it for a day to make sure it is not uncomfortable. You can also make a better estimate of the jewelry’s durability after trying it out.

Think about how best ways to look after your jewelry. Each kind of setting, metal, and stone has its own particular maintenance need. Not all jewelry should be cared for in the same way. Consult with a jeweler if you are unsure exactly how to care for your own jewels.

Costume jewelry requires specific care. Often, stones will be glued into their settings, which makes them more prone to falling out than regular jewelry.
